Description
Urinary tract infection is one of the most common infections in most adult women and also in some men though the probability of men experiencing urinary tract infection is quite less when compared to women. However, this infection is not only restricted to adults; even children might get this infection so this article would be discussing more about what this infection really is and what its basic symptoms are.
Urinary tract infection is basically a bacterial infection in any part of the urinary tract. Millions of people are affected by this disease every year and it has become quite a concern as to why people contract this disease and how they can prevent the infection from spreading too much. The common statistics are that one in every five women develops urinary tract infection during her lifetime. Although it is quite rare for men to develop urinary tract infection, it is quite a serious issue if they do since the infection can spread more easily in men’s bodies than a women’s body.
UTI Causes
Urinary tract infection or more commonly known as UTI are usually said to be caused be the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). The bacteria travels to the urethra and sticks there and as a result of that spreads the infection. However, this is only one type of bacteria which causes a urinary tract infection. There are many other forms of bacteria which can also cause this infection. Moreover, due to the diversity of antibiotics, many different strains of these bacteria have developed which makes it even more harder to treat the bacteria and get rid of the infection. Therefore, whenever people have recurrent urinary tract infection they are advised to have their urine tested for which kind of bacteria are they being infected by so that they get the anti-biotic which is specific to that bacteria.
The bacteria can spread in your urinary tract to develop different kinds of infections which vary in the degree of discomfort and seriousness. For example, the urinary tract comprises of the urethra, bladder and kidneys. Hence, if the bacteria infect solely the urethra then the infection is called urethritis, if the bacteria move up and also infect the bladder then the infection is known as cystitis and lastly if the bacteria spread to the kidneys and start multiplying there then the infection becomes quite a serious issue and is known as pyelonephritis.
All these infections are of the urinary tract but vary in intensity as the degree to which the bacteria has spread in the urinary tract is different. However, it is always best to get rid of the infection completely so that you leave no trace of any bacteria and so that the bacteria or any other micro organism which might have caused the infection does not stay in the body and multiply.
UTI Symptoms
Coming on to the symptoms of UTI and how you can tell if you have got urinary tract infection and not something else. For starters, your urine would be cloudy and would have a distinctive smell to it that would not have been present before. This is due to the reason that on average urine that is passed through your body contains little or no bacteria or nay other micro organisms. When these bacteria are present, your urine becomes cloudy and also smelly as a result. Moreover, feeling discomfort while urinating is also a major symptom of having urinary tract infection. Another way you can tell that you might have gotten UTI is that you may be urinating way too frequently as well and also in little quantities which would give you a burning sensation. Usually a person goes to the bathroom to urinate around 4 to 6 times daily so if you feel the need to urinate again and gain then you might consider getting a urine test done to see if you might have a slight infection present.
If your infection has not been cured from the start then it may develop into something serious as the bacteria would have spread to the kidneys. Hence, when you feel the slightest of the above mentioned symptoms then be on your guard so that you can catch the infection right away and curb the infection so that it does not spread and cause you more discomfort.
